Novartis and Pink Ribbon launch Wander Boobs campaign

Breast cancer does not disappear with age. After age 69, you are no longer invited to the population screening, but the risk remains. Therefore, it is important that even somewhat more mature women recognize the signs that indicate breast cancer.

A survey of 170 female breast cancer patients over the age of 65, conducted by health consultant Esperity and the PXL Care Innovation Center of Excellence on behalf of Novartis, shows that they often receive less information about breast cancer. This has an impact on their breast awareness. However, breast cancer does not disappear with age. The risk remains. However, once women are no longer invited to the breast cancer population screening, they are less alert to the alarm signals. Moreover, they feel less addressed by breast cancer campaigns that show mainly younger women. For these reasons, breast cancer in later life is more often detected at a late stage, more often with metastases, which has an impact on survival rates. However, breast cancer is also treatable in older age.

Tournée

Pharmaceutical company Novartis and Pink Ribbon are teaming up to create a campaign aimed specifically at women 65 and older: Wander boobs. Novartis had unique, hyper-realistic educational breast models developed that look and feel like the skin of a woman between the ages of 60 and 70. These models or "wander boobs" contain eight of the nine main alarm signals of breast cancer and make a possible risk tangible and recognizable (feeling a lump and seeing a lump were merged in this model). The Wander boobs are beginning a tour of Belgium. They can be loaned by hospitals, health institutions, municipalities and other orgnizations ... who want to show and teach women of age how to recognize the warning signs in time.

Ambassadors

Flemish actress Martine Jonckheere, herself stricken with breast cancer in 2006 and 2023, is the first ambassador of this campaign. She makes a warm appeal to other fellow sufferers: "First and foremost, think about yourself and your health. Be alert to your body's signals and dare to ask for help. Don't feel ashamed because this happened to you, but always be proud of yourself. You deserve that."
