Normal breasts can vary greatly
Breasts vary greatly in size, shape, firmness, and position, and this variation is completely normal. Factors such as genetics, age, hormonal changes, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations all influence how breasts develop and change throughout life. A common source of concern is asymmetry: the difference in size or shape between the left and right breasts. This is perfectly normal. Most women’s breasts are slightly different. Nipples can also vary in size, color, and orientation, without this indicating anything about health. It is quite possible for a woman to have two different nipples. Sometimes they are not perfectly symmetrical, one may be larger than the other, or they may differ slightly in color. It is also possible that one nipple protrudes slightly more than the other. Finally, breasts change over the course of a woman’s life. During puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause, they may become more sensitive, fuller, or, conversely, saggier. These are changes related to hormonal fluctuations. They are completely natural.
It’s important to get to know your own body and be familiar with your breasts. This helps you spot changes early on that might not be normal. A helpful tool for this is our chart of the nine warning signs. If you feel a lump, notice a dimple, experience nipple discharge, or have breast pain, consult your doctor for further examination. By being alert to these signs, there is a good chance that any breast cancer will be detected early and can be effectively treated.
