Word Geknipt voor Haar Hair Salon: A Small Cut, A Big Difference

Every day, hairdressers help people look their best and feel more confident. But did you know that as a hairdresser, you can also have a direct impact on the lives of people with breast cancer? Through Pink Ribbon “Geknipt voor Haar” project, you not only give donated hair a second life, but you also support our nonprofit’s initiatives.

At Xtrahair by Mattiss, they know exactly what that means. “We have a dual role,” Laurent explains. “On the one hand, at our Mattis salon, we cut the healthy hair of people who want to donate it for free—and give them a great haircut afterward. On the other hand, as a Belgian manufacturer of wigs and hairpieces at Xtrahair, we purchase and process that hair for people who truly need it.”

Free cut

Laurent and his team at the Mattiss hair salon go above and beyond, even cutting donors’ hair completely free of charge. Why? “Because the impact is enormous,” explains the owner. “We work every day with people who are losing their hair and see how much of a burden that places on their well-being and social lives. That’s why we want to give something back.” “Plus, we need a lot of hair: in all colors, textures, and lengths, including gray hair.” The more that’s donated, the better, Laurent reasons. “It’s a small gesture that can make a huge difference.”

Important tips for hairdressers

Are you a hairdresser interested in participating? If so, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure donations are put to good use:

  • Divide the hair into several small ponytails (about 20), not just 2
  • Make sure each leader is at least 35 cm long
  • Use two hair ties per ponytail
  • Consider getting a layered haircut to save as much hair as possible

This ensures that as much donated hair as possible can be put to good use.

More than just wigs

Not every patient needs a full wig right away. “Sometimes hairpieces are sufficient,” Laurent explains. “They feel lighter and more natural and can be worn for longer periods, such as during follow-up treatments. They can even be made from donated hair—sometimes from the patient’s own hair.”
