Nipple tattoos

Those who opt for reconstruction after breast surgery usually also want a nipple tattoo. Where can you go for this?

In Belgium, nipple tattoos are usually performed under the supervision of the plastic surgeon performing the breast reconstruction. Health insurance covers nipple tattooing as part of the reconstruction process, with the tattoo being performed in the hospital itself, for example by a nurse who specializes in this field. In addition to hospitals, you also have the option of having a nipple tattoo performed by an aesthetic tattoo specialist in a specialized studio. The result often looks better, but in this case, the health insurance fund does not provide a reimbursement. The cost averages between 250 and 350 euros per nipple tattoo. There are exceptions, where you can still get a partial reimbursement in a specialized tattoo studio, but you will need a referral from your treating physician or surgeon. Ask your treatment team for more information. Any reimbursement depends on your individual needs, the severity of your illness, and the breast clinic where you are being treated.

There is no list of recognized studios where you can get a nipple tattoo. Ask at the hospital or search for one yourself on Google. Remember, a nipple tattoo only has an aesthetic function. The feeling is gone forever as a result of the surgery.
