Information about breast cancer

That one white wine also increases your risk of breast cancer a tiny bit

The Drugline organizes Tournée Minérale every year. Excessive alcohol consumption can damage health. It also increases the risk of breast cancer by 10% for every glass you drink daily. What does that mean in concrete terms? Dr. Marleen Finoulst of Pink Ribbon 's Breast Cancer Knowledge Center figured it out for you.

First this: leading cancer experts agree that the link between alcohol consumption and a number of cancers has been sufficiently proven. In the professional journal Journal of Clinical Oncology, they state that a total of 3.5% of all cancers can be blamed on alcohol, with heavy drinkers obviously being at greatest risk. An important nuance here is that not all cancers are affected by alcohol to the same extent. In fact, some, such as skin cancer or leukemia, have nothing at all to do with alcohol. For other cancers, however, there is a clearly proven link. These include: Cancers of liver, mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, colon and breast, with the link being strongest for cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus. For breast cancer, the link is weaker. For example, an analysis of existing studies shows that, compared with teetotalers, you have a maximum 10% greater chance of developing breast cancer if you drink one glass a day. That sounds like a lot, but what does it mean concretely?

The impact of that one glass of wine

On average, a woman has a 1.45% chance of developing breast cancer between her 40th and 50th birthdays. If she drinks one glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage daily, her risk of breast cancer rises to 1.59% at worst. With each glass of alcohol, the risk increases. For example, her risk of breast cancer rises to at most 1.74% when she drinks 2 glasses daily, and she has a 1.88% chance of developing breast cancer when she drinks 3 days a day.

As a woman ages, so do her chances of developing breast cancer. For example, between her 50th and 60th birthdays, she has an average 2.4% chance of developing this terrible disease. And again, the risk increases a bit when she drinks alcohol daily. With a daily glass, her risk rises to 2.64%. With 2 glasses to 2.88% and with 3 glasses to 3.12%. That risk continues to increase in subsequent years.

Detox cure

While the impact of alcohol on breast cancer risk is well proven, it is also important not to overestimate these risk factors. Breast cancer happens to women. We cannot change the main risk factors such as age, family burden and heredity. Therefore, we prefer not to speak of an increase in risk, but of real risks.

At the end of the day, it is important to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Not only to reduce your risk of breast cancer, but for your overall health. Sufficient exercise, not smoking, avoiding obesity and being moderate with alcohol are among the risk factors for breast cancer that we can influence. For regular drinkers, participating in Tournée Minérale is a blessing for the body. It may be the only detox cure that really works.
