Were we going for a walk?
During the past, rainy month of May, Pink Ribbon, the national organization dedicated to fighting breast cancer, hosted the 9th edition of The Pink Walk. This is not a typical walking event that takes place on one day, but a commitment you make throughout the month. As many as 7,637 enthusiastic walkers took up the challenge to exercise more throughout an entire month. Despite the bad weather, those together walked a whopping 35 times around the world.
A healthy and active lifestyle can prevent 1 in 3 cancer diagnoses. That's why Pink Ribbon organized its 9th The Pink Walk. New during this edition was the invitation of cute four-legged friends who encouraged their owners to take a walk together. After all, research has shown that people with a dog take up to 3,000 more steps per day. But even without a dog, of course, one could once again participate in The Pink Walk. And fortunately many did.
In addition to the income from the registration fees, the non-profit organization could count on € 69,696 in free donations, on the one hand from the walkers themselves, but also from their families, friends, colleagues or neighbors who encouraged the walking performance. The same goes for the 'Breast Friends - 2024' team. Together they collected the wonderful amount of € 3,337. All proceeds of the 9th The Pink Walk added up to a total of € 162,792, which the non-profit organization can use in the fight against breast cancer.
The 9th edition of The Pink Walk was another success in the business world. A total of 149 companies participated, accounting for almost half of all participants. Notable: Organon, pharmaceutical company from Heist-op-den-Berg, participated with no less than 278 participants. And the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain and construction company N-Allo from Gosselies closed the top 3 with 177 and 170 participants, respectively.
"Organon's mission is to improve the health and well-being of women and their families, which fits very well with the objective of Pink Ribbon asbl. We are therefore proud to participate in The Pink Walk to show our support for the fight against breast cancer, a disease that affects many women and which, unfortunately, we are confronted with several times at work. In our company, we give employees the opportunity to participate in The Pink Walk for free in order to, on the one hand, create awareness about the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and cancer prevention, and on the other hand, as a company, to contribute our bit (or step) to breast cancer research." Walk for Pink Ribbon
The month of May was a real walking month at Pink Ribbon. In addition to The Pink Walk, the second edition of the Walk for Pink Ribbon took place in Maasmechelen on May 20-2024. During this live event organized by Pink Ribbon, together with Wandelsport Vlaanderen, 1,754 sporty walkers descended on Terhills to enjoy together the breathtaking nature of the Hoge Kempen National Park or the architectural splendor of the Tuinwijk-Eisden. No less than 20,777 km were hiked and 266 liters of coffee were drunk. Moreover, at the end of the walk, each participant received a delicious piece of Limburg Flan, accounting for no less than 200 cakes. All this was arranged by 33 enthusiastic volunteers.
As the 9th edition of The Pink Walk draws to a close, Pink Ribbon wants to encourage everyone to keep moving because a healthy and active lifestyle can avoid 1 in 3 cancer diagnoses. This way, everyone can also already train for the festive 10th edition of The Pink Walk that will take place in October.
