Dear Reader,
I'm Zoë and have been working at Pink Ribbon for three months. From day one I was welcomed into an incredibly warm team and immediately got to work on our new annual theme Shine a Light. With this campaign we want to draw attention to aspects of breast cancer that are often underexposed.
When I started, I thought breast cancer was already pretty much talked about. Until I realized how little I actually know about it myself. One in eight women in Belgium will be affected...one in eight... How many friends, sisters, aunts or nieces could that be? How many will I lose to breast cancer? I actually still get goose bumps thinking about it. So I came to the conclusion and harsh reality that I don't really know that much about breast cancer and I will certainly not be the only one. So there is a real need for more knowledge, prevention and awareness of breast cancer since it affects so many people and their environment.
That's why this year with Pink Ribbon we're calling more attention to genetic testing. Because those who know they are at increased risk can get treatment sooner and preventively. I also learned that exercise plays an incredibly important role in prevention, and I don't mean that you have to run a marathon right away. Just walking makes a big difference. With our Pink March, we encourage everyone to take daily steps. In addition, thanks to our new partnership with Walking.be, there will soon be four additional walking events to benefit Pink Ribbon! Hope to see you there!
Do you prefer walking in the evening? Then you might also come across a lot of pink lights along the way! Because to draw more attention to breast cancer, a lot of cities like Lier, Leuven, Kortrijk, Bruges and Brussels are lighting up their town halls or towers this month.
Where else do you spot Pink Ribbon ? Our partners are doing a lot of rosy promotions where you can support us: For example, Greenpan gives discounts on beautiful pink pans, you can already prepare for Christmas with our flashy pink baubles and Carrefour organizes several donation actions through which you can support us.
I wish you many cozy, inspiring, fresh, yet warm walks during this International Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Love,
Zoe
Who is at risk for hereditary breast cancer?
Pink Ribbon is asking the government to give every person with breast cancer and all relatives of that person the opportunity to be tested for the high-risk breast cancer genes BCRA1 and BRCA2. Now too many carriers of these remain in the dark.
In our country, an estimated 33,000 to 55,000 people are carriers of the breast cancer gene. At least half simply do not know. Pink Ribbon wants this to change and has asked policymakers of our long to address this issue.

Shine a light!
Pink Ribbon 's mission is to highlight what is not yet sufficiently known; what has not received enough attention. That's why our theme this year is "Shine a light."
- We focus on women living with the tough diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer and living a meaningful life. How do you do that? We let women speak for themselves.
- We keep harping on the 9 alarm signals so you notice breast cancer early. Do you know them all?
- Did you know that many women conceal, even from their families, that they have breast cancer because it is such a difficult story to share. Recognizable?

Buildings in pink
During the month of October, several monuments worldwide will be bathed in pink to draw attention to breast cancer. These "Pink Illuminations" are coming to fruition in our country thanks to two Pink Ribbon partners, The Estée Lauder Companise and Political Intelligence.
Pictured is the Station d'Europe, the symbol of the European Parliament in Brussels. Other cities and towns are also showing their solidarity.

New clothes make the man/woman!
That old Roman expression (vestis virum reddit) means to say that how you present yourself, your first impression, has a great influence on how you are valued. At Pink Ribbon , we've taken that to heart and spent the past few months working hard on a new website. It's more than just a pretty look, you'll find an awful lot of substantive information and we're adding to it on a weekly basis.
The website in built around central questions you ask yourself when it comes to breast cancer. What is breast cancer? How is breast cancer detected? Can you avoid breast cancer? What treatments are there? What about after treatment? Around these topics you will find a wealth of information, testimonials and projects.
